Don’t miss ADG’s 10th Brazilian Graphic Design Biennial

In the month of June 2013, São Paulo will receive the 10th Brazilian Graphic Design Biennial. Organized by ADG Brasil, the national Graphic Designers Association, the Biennial has been, since its first edition in 1992, a grand celebration of Brazilian . It is Brazil’s most traditional assembly of members from the creative industry – professionals, clients, suppliers, scholars, educators and students –, featuring not only a selection of outstanding recently-developed projects, but also lectures, conferences, guided tours, parallel shows, publication launches and other activities that commemorate and promote Brazilian design. The event kick-starts with an opening ceremony at Memorial da América Latina, on Friday June 14th, where approximately 70 projects, selected by an international jury made up of professionals from 14 countries, will be awarded for their outstanding work.

ADG’s 10th Brazilian Graphic Design Biennial

The 10th edition of the Biennial represents an extensive selection of the best of Brazilian design developed throughout the last four years, revealing a growing production of design that is expanding across different global markets, and featuring the largest number of projects in all of its history – a total of 444. These have been selected by a diverse jury of 89 renowned professionals from eight Brazilian states and from countries in Europe, and the Americas – a specialist and contemporary panel whose ethos is enabling Brazilian design to truly break out beyond national barriers.

“The Brazilian Graphic Design Biennial is the moment when the Brazilian graphic design scene reflects upon its own achievements, debates its course and outlines its plans for the future, showing an intense dialogue with innovation, entrepreneurship, culture, , sustainability and society”, says , designer, educator and the Biennial’s General Coordinator.

The selected projects are presented within 4 main axes: BIENNIAL, comprises of editing content for publications, as well as fonts developed for reading; DIGITAL BIENNIAL, with works developed for interactive assimilation, in movement or on-line; PROMOTIONAL BIENNIAL, with service, product and event identification and promotional projects; BIENNIAL ETC&SOFORTH, where dialogues with other project activities, such as architecture, product design, illustration, , and art in general.

Being Brazil’s biggest design event, the Biennial is also part of the official calendar of Apex-Brasil’s Innovation and Design Year 2013 and it is one of the events celebrating the 50th anniversary of – International Council of , the world’s most representative graphic design organization.

Parallel Events

Seizing the Biennial’s opportunity of converging on some of the biggest talent in Brazil’s creative economy, ADG Brasil and Apex-Brasil will hold the 10th Brazilian Graphic Design Biennial Conference in parallel, an event featuring showcase of a few outstanding projects of the main , as well as a panel debate on new tendencies in Brazilian and international design. The Conference will include the presence of some of the Biennial’s most awarded professionals, as well as distinguished members of its international jury, such as design author and curator Adélia Borges, design strategy and public policies specialist Gabriel Patrocínio, and sustainable design authority Mario Van Der Meulen, from Belgium.

Through partnerships with the Brazilian Illustrators Society – SIB, Fundação SM and Galeria Marta Traba, the Biennial will also hold lectures from Latin American artists such as illustrators and authors Jairo Buitrago (Colombia) and Gonzalo Cárcamo (Chile), and photographer and Pedro Augusto Romero Malevini (Argentina); as well as with artists Carola Trimano and Fabio Qualio, from Atelier Olhares Impressos. During the last weekend of the Biennial (28th to 30th June) two other special events will take place: the cycle of lectures by Encontro ADG: Bienal Digital, presenting cases of interactive design selected for the Biennial, and a São Paulo traditional design meeting – Design na Brasa: O Papel Social do Design.
